Getting a British Virgin Islands marriage license is fairly easy, which makes it a great choice for a destination wedding.
The process doesn’t take long and you don’t have to be a resident for more than one day to receive a Special License.
When you’re on the British Virgin Islands you can apply for your marriage license at the Registrar-General’s Office in Tortola.
You can also fill out the application online here. The license only takes one business day to be processed. It is then valid for 3 months!
Documents you will need when applying for a British Virgin Islands marriage license are your passports, proof of marital status and a postage stamp. You’ll also need two witnesses, who will have to sign the application and be present during the ceremony.
Once you have applied for your marriage license and paid all necessary fees, which vary depending on your ceremony location as well as the time of ceremony, you should be all set to marry after 1 day.
You can choose to get married at the Registrar-General’s Office, outside of the office (on any of the adjoining islands), or in a church. Set up a time and place as soon as possible so that everything is planned and goes as smoothly as it can. If you want a priest or minister to perform the ceremony, you may need additional documents.
Since legal marriage requirements in the British Virgin Islands may change over time, you’re advised to check the official government website for exact details. You can find up to date information here.
The BVI provides a perfect and romantic setting for your wedding. As long as you are aware of all the marriage requirements and plan ahead, you should have no issues getting married on the beautiful islands!
